Cameron's Monarchy
The G carries the story of David Cameron's calls for reform of the monarchy. Alas, he is not a closet republican, however, the reforms he suggests are all eminently agreeable. He wishes to strip the monarchy of these powers, and transfer them to Parliament:
Cameron's aim is not to degrade the position of the Queen, but that of the 'Presidential' Prime Minister. The above powers are effectively exercised by Government Ministers.
These reforms, if properly carried out, would go some way towards increasing accountability of the 'elective dictatorship'. Drive on David, drive on.
It'll be interesting to see if Brown's reaction is to suddenly get all Monarchy-loving to try to steal Tory votes over the issue.
· declare war and send troops abroad;
· to make international and European treaties;
· to make appointments and award honours;
· to make major changes to the structure of government.
